The 100th day of school is a huge milestone in kindergarten! Counting to 100 is a kindergarten standard that we work on every day, and it’s so fun to celebrate when we finally reach that number. There are so many fun literacy and math activities that you can do to celebrate the big day!
You can find the activities that I’m sharing in my HUGE 100th day of School resource HERE.
Reading Activities
There are a ton of read alouds that are great for the 100th day of school. Some of my favorites are The Night Before the 100th Day of School, 100th Day Worries, Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day, and The 100 Hats of the Cat in the Hat.
I like to throw in a read aloud whenever we have a few extra minutes throughout the day. Students also enjoy looking at the books when they finish an activity early.
The emergent reader is great for small group instruction or independent reading time. As students read through the book, they are counting objects by 10s, all the way to 100. The book also includes tracking dots to help them point to words.
Writing Activities
Throughout the day, we talk a lot about the number 100 and how much it really is. Then, I have students think about things they would want to have 100 of and things they would not want 100 of. Together we create an anchor chart. It can be so fun to hear their responses
There are also several writing activities I like to do. Some great writing prompts include “When I am 100 years old…” or “If I had $100…” My favorite is “My 100 can make…”. For this activity, students cut out a number 100 and turn it into a picture and write about it. I love to see how creative their responses are.
Math Activities
Of course, with the day being all about the number 100, there are so many opportunities to tie in math.
I love to play a lot of games that allow students to practice counting to 100. These can be done individually, in partners, or small groups. Students can flip a coin 100 times, lick a lollipop 100 times, and roll a dice until they get to 100. The 100th day workout is also a fun way to give students brain breaks throughout the day.
100th Day Necklace
A necklace is a staple activity for the 100th day of school. I have done this activity with both Fruit Loops and beads and they both turned out great. Whichever you choose to use, give students a counting mat for them to count out all of the pieces first, then have them string them on. You don’t have to do this, but I like to have students use one color for each row to reinforce the idea that 100 is 10 groups of 10.
100th Day Crowns
Along with the necklaces, I have had students make two different types of crowns in the past, depending on how much time we have. One option is to have students color a crown and attach a headband. Another option is to give students 10 strips of 10 squares and have them put either stickers or stamps on, then attach the strips to a headband. The second option takes more time, but is great for showing that 100 is made of 10 groups of 10.
Center Activities
Two of my favorite center activities that are always a big hit are puzzles and fill in the hundreds chart. For the puzzles, I simply cut apart a hundreds chart or the counting by 10s pictures and students have to put them back together. For fill in the hundreds chart, students have to put the cards in the correct spot on the chart. Depending on their level, there are different versions. Some students might just do the number, some might do base-10 blocks, and some a number sentence.
100 Pieces of Snack
One of my favorite activities of the entire day is the 100th day snack. Each student gets a snack mat with 10 10-frames on it. Then, I have 10 different small food items. You can use anything for this, such as cereal, Gold Fish, raisins, marshmallows, chocolate chips, small candies, etc. Students have to count out 10 of each item and place them on their 10-frames to create 10 groups of 10 items to make 100 total pieces. Finally, the best part, they get to eat it when they are done!
100th Day Crafts
A fun celebration day would not be complete without some type of craft. I love making these gumball machines and cupcakes because they are great fine motor practice. I usually let students choose which one they want to make. Then, they use q-tips and paint to make 100 dots.
Student Gifts
If you really want to make the day even more special, you can always give your students a fun little gift to take home. I have made the number 100 out of cookies before, and also given students a glow stick with a cute gift tag attached.
My 100th day resource also includes student certificates to officially declare them 100 days smarter.
I love the 100th day of school because it feels just like a fun holiday, but it’s also so easy to stick to teaching standards. This may be far more than you are able to fit in one day, so you can definitely pick and choose your favorite activities or spread them out over multiple days.
You can find all of these activities and MORE in my 100th day of school resource.
If you are looking for other fun 100th day of school items, such as pencils, stickers, glasses, bookmarks, etc., my favorite place to shop for those is at Oriental Trading. They have a huge selection and cheap prices to buy items in bulk.
