March is such a fun month! It finally starts to feel like spring and students have gained so many skills and a lot of independence. And of course, it’s also the month to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! I have a ton of activities that I love for this holiday!
Morning Bins
Morning bins are how I soft start the day in my classroom every day. Students come in and get to do fun hands-on, fine motor activities at their tables. These activities include building with different materials, cutting, hole punching, etc. The March morning bins are all related to St. Patrick’s Day. Students always have so much fun with these activities and look forward to the new theme each month.
Sensory Bin
In my classroom, sensory bins are always a part of our centers. In this sensory bin, I paired some green Easter grass, black pots, and plastic gold coins with the Lucky CVC Words activity from my Year Long Sensory Bin Bundle. Students just pick a shamrock card, look at the picture, and spell the word on the recording sheet. It is a super simple activity, but great CVC word practice.
Lucky Cereal Graphing
Lucky Charms cereal make a great math manipulative! With this activity, students graph all of the pieces of their cereal. Then, when they are finished, of course they get to eat it. It’s fun and yummy!
Color By Code Activities
Color By Code activities are always a huge hit with my students. They are great for reviewing skills we have worked on, such as letters and numbers. I use them all the time as early finisher activities, morning work, and even in my writing center that students can visit during free play time.
Leprechaun Directed Drawing
Each month, I love to do a directed drawing with my students. We learn to draw the picture together as a whole group, then students get to color their drawing. Afterwards, we hang them up on our student work display board.
In March, we draw these adorable little leprechauns.
St. Patrick's Day Read Alouds
Story time is my favorite time of the day in kindergarten! As with any holiday, I love to incorporate some fun themed read alouds. Some of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day books include How To Catch A Leprechaun, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover, and Silly McGilly.
Check out all of my favorite March read alouds below!
Fruit Loop Rainbow
Another fun activity involving cereal are these Fruit Loop rainbows. All you need are pipe cleaners, Fruit Loop cereal, and marshmallows. Students string cereal on the pipe cleaner, then stick the ends into two marshmallows to create a rainbow.
Other Activities
These are a couple of other St. Patrick’s Day activities I love to use in my classroom! My students love practicing their number sense by putting the gold coins in the pots. Math the Room is also a favorite math center where students go around the room, find the pictures, and record their answer. It is great for practicing counting, adding, and subtracting.
Hopefully this gave you some ideas for some fun and engaging activities to do in March with your students.
